This time of year, many units are beginning preparations for a unit adventure at one of the BSA’s National High Adventure Bases: Philmont; Florida Seabase; Northern Tier; and the Summit Bechtel Reserve, or an adventure in the outdoors on their own. Regardless of your plans leaders and older youth should be trained in Wilderness and Remote First Aid (WRFA) and CPR/AED to understand the risks of high adventure and to be prepared to provide first aid in a wilderness or remote environment.
Each of the National High Adventure Bases, as well as some Council high adventure programs, require wilderness first aid provider certification to attend a high adventure trek. Check with the NHAB or Council high adventure program you will be attending for specifics. In general at least two participants trained and certified in WFA is required for Philmont treks. Northern Tier, Florida Sea Base and The Summit Bechtel Reserve currently require one trained participant per trek.
