Our History

The Piedmont Scout Reservation, home of Camp Bud Schiele, has been a cornerstone of Scouting in western North Carolina for decades. Operated by the Piedmont Council, Scouting America, the reservation encompasses more than 1,500 acres of beautiful forest, trails, and lakefront in Rutherfordton, North Carolina. This scenic property serves as the council’s primary outdoor adventure center, hosting thousands of Scouts and leaders each year for camping, training, and high-adventure activities.

Camp Bud Schiele officially opened in 1982 as the heart of the reservation and quickly became one of the premier Scout camps in the region. Named in honor of the Piedmont Council's first Scout Executive, R. M. “Bud” Schiele, the camp reflects his lifelong dedication to Scouting and youth development.

Today, Camp Bud Schiele continues to uphold its mission of delivering the best possible Scouting experience. From its summer camp program and waterfront adventures to Order of the Arrow gatherings and leadership training, the camp remains a place where character is built, friendships are forged, and the spirit of adventure thrives. With its blend of history, tradition, and outdoor excellence, Camp Bud Schiele stands as a proud symbol of Scouting’s impact across the Piedmont Council and beyond.
